Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of each leg, becomes compressed or irritated. This can lead to pain, numbness, weakness, and tingling in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
The main cause of sciatica is compression of the sciatic nerve. This can happen due to a variety of factors, such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or a pelvic injury. Sciatica can also be caused by a tight piriformis muscle, which is a small muscle located deep in the buttock, or by a pregnancy-related condition called pubic symphysis dysfunction.
In some cases, the exact cause of sciatica may not be known. This is known as “non-specific sciatica” and can be caused by anything from poor posture or poor ergonomics to an infection or inflammation in the spine.
No matter what the cause, it is important to seek professional medical care if sciatica is experienced for more than a few days. Treatment for sciatica may include physical therapy, medications, and in some cases, surgery.
